“Coaching is a conversation, a dialogue, whereby the coach and the individual interact in a dynamic exchange to achieve goals, enhance performance and move the individual forward to greater success.”

How to begin, improve and stay coaching

In Oxfordshire, we recognise that our staff, partners, coaches and volunteers are our greatest asset, and without supporting and developing the paid and volunteer workforce it will be impossible to increase participation or offer better access to sport and physical activity.  Workforce development therefore underpins all our planning, ensuring that we can continue to be at the forefront of sport and physical activity supported by a dedicated, motivated and well trained workforce.

Coaching is one of the most rewarding aspects of sport and is central to the development of any sport and the individual participating in the sport. It is estimated that 500,000 people coach regularly in the UK, in environments ranging from the school playground to the international arena, however coaching is a continuing process and as such needs to be developed.

The development of high quality coaches will not only contribute to improving the quality of already existing activity but also generate new activity and increase participation.

Key areas of coach development within the Oxfordshire Sports Partnership are:

  • Community Sports Coach Scheme
  • Coach Mentoring
  • Coach Operating Standards
  • Coach Development (Education courses, Recruitment projects)
